History designs future
The CCH opened in 1973 with the vision of being the best and largest facility of its kind in Europe. In 2020 history will repeat itself.
Continuing its very own, unique tradition of providing the best purpose-built, stand-alone convention center, the new CCH will offer tailor-made solutions for future event formats and their specific requirements.
After more than 42 years, the technical systems of the building complex and the flexibility of its spatial and functional infrastructure will be completely redesigned to accommodate today's as well as tomorrow's needs. A number of proven functional and design elements will be incorporated into the new CCH.
The new (traditional) CCH sign will be integrated into the new facade. Since the building will be expanded towards the Planten un Blomen park, the sign will be clearly visible from the exit of the Dammtor train station. The same sign forms the basis of the new CCH logo. Furthermore, the circular stainless steel door handles have shown to be both stylistically defining and functionally practical. They are installed both inside and outside of the center's double-wing doors, which allow more visitors to enter and exit the building than revolving doors would.
The lighting design of the CCH was sensational even in the 1970s, featuring Germany's first-ever clavilux found in Hall 3. It will be fully restored for the new CCH, with one exception – it will use advanced, efficient LED technology.
The visitors of the center's first major conventions in the mid '70s were especially pleased with the spacious foyers which were based on the concept of providing one square meter of foyer space per each auditorium seat. The new building will adopt this concept, expanding it to include exhibition space as a third parameter: 1 seat : 1 sqm of foyer space : 1 sqm of exhibition space.
